Avoided Deforestation

Making sure today's natural forests…

Bosques Pico Bonito is dedicated to avoiding the devastating effects of deforestation. As world markets recognize the profound importance of avoided deforestation, REDD carbon offsets have become a positive factor in funding the costs of such activities.

One of the single largest contributors to the release of carbon dioxide(CO2) into the atmosphere – and thus directly contributing to global warming – is the continued cutting of existing trees in natural forests. This activity has a duel devastating impact of not only releasing CO2 as the activity occurs but also eliminating the ability of these previously standing forests from sequestering any further CO2 in the future. As a result, a major emphasis has been placed on the avoidance of deforestation wherever possible.

As world markets recognize the environmental and scientific value of these activities, a marketplace has developed to offer carbon offset value for such work. New standards supporting these offset values are being introduced under what is recognized as Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD). Bosques Pico Bonito has collaborated with the World Bank to introduce one of the world’s first recognized standard methodology for measuring the impact of REDD and thus the carbon offset value (amount of carbon tones sequestered) achieved.

To this end, as part of the Company’s land and forest preservation work, Bosques Pico Bonito will maintain large areas of existing natural forest areas and habitat that would have otherwise been predictably deforested. These areas will generate REDD carbon offsets which in turn will be sold to various worldwide buyers including the World Bank BioCarbon Fund.
